That which is empty of meaning, purpose, or content. The term occurs thirty-four times in the NRSV, thirty-one of which are in the book of Ecclesiastes, which holds that the search for meaning in life is “vanity” (elusive and without definite substance). In the Bible, the word “vanity” is not used to mean conceit or preoccupation with self.
